Virginia Agricultural Best Management Practice Program

Non-point source pollution is defined as a form of pollution that does not stem from a single source.

Agricultural runoff, which can often carry pesticides and excess nutrients, is a significant contributor to this water quality problem.

One tool that districts use to protect water quality is the Virginia Agricultural Best Management Practice Cost-Share Program. This program provides funds and tax credit to farmers to implement conservation practices that improve water quality and boost productivity of farming operations.

"Experts estimate that 50% of the nitrogen and 29% of the phosphorus entering our state's surface waters comes from farmland! "
-DCR Virginia website

In the 2005-2006 fiscal year, James River SWCD paid farmers $94,227.47 to help establish practices on over 1,400 acres in the Chesapeake Bay and Albemarle-Pamlico Sound watersheds.
